No joke, some people make a living from winning competitions. It’s called comping, and it’s gone as far as becoming a type of profession.

Who doesn’t want to win something online for free? It’s an enticing offer, and it’s fun!

But it also sounds unrealistic. How is it that some people make a living from this while you’re entering tons of comps and have never won a thing? Do they have some secret they aren’t sharing? Are they simply lucky?

The answer is yes, and no.

No, they aren’t just lucky.

And yes, they have figured out a few tricks of the trade, because winning competitions is the same as anything else you want to get good at, you have to stick with it and learn as you go.

Remember, if something isn’t working for you, don’t keep doing the same thing and wondering why! Chances are you need a new strategy.

You can’t control if they randomly select you as a winner; what you can do is significantly increase your chances of winning by changing what you can control.

We’ve put together this list of tips to help you shortcut some learning curves so that you can start winning more often (and having more fun!).

1. Start with a wish list

Write down what your top 5 ideal wins would be. It’s important to be as lavish as you want while you’re thinking about this. It’s a wish list, and it can be whatever you want, so don’t restrict your thinking because it doesn’t seem achievable.

People are winning amazing prizes every day, why couldn’t that be you?

Whatever you put on your list, don’t worry about how it’s going to happen, just write it down and decide in yourself that somehow it’s going to happen for you.

Creating your wish list is fun, helps you keep track of your goals, and narrows down the types of competitions you should enter.

2. Enter lots of comps and enter more than once

You’ve got to be in it to win it, and being in it a lot means you’re more likely to win (makes sense, yeah?).

A lot of compers use auto-fill or cut and paste their information from a pre-made document so that they can quickly submit loads of online forms. You can also create an email template for competitions that require you to enter via email.

A simple way to increase your chances of winning is to enter more than once. Statistically speaking, just entering twice doubles your chances of winning, so why not enter every day until the competition ends?

If you’re just starting out and entering everything you can, you will quickly start to see where you are most successful and what competitions are a waste of your time. This is all part of refining your comping strategy.

3. Be prepared

One way to make it easier to enter comps all the time is to be a little bit prepared. Try blocking out a few hours on a Monday (or whatever day works for you) each week to dedicate to your comping. Set a reminder on your phone so you don’t forget and add it to your calendar.

You can also create some photo folders on your phone and start collecting pictures that you could use to enter various photo competitions on Instagram. Start taking note of popular themes for Instagram competitions, like:

  • Mothers day and fathers day
  • Christmas
  • Halloween

Start stocking up on pictures you have ready to go for entering photo comps.

Also, make sure you keep a list of the comps you’ve entered and check back to see if you’ve won. Try and keep a record of when the competition closes, and the announce the winner so that you don’t accidentally miss the memo if you win.

4. Find the right fishing hole

Looking in the right places for high-quality competitions will save you a lot of time wading through spam and competitions with low chances of winning.

There is something to be said about competitions on social media. Because so many people enter them, the chances of winning are often low. Try sourcing a few local competitions instead. You can do this by following local businesses online, signing up for their mailing list, and Googling competitions in your local area.

At Doorluck, we only host quality competitions, so you don’t need to worry about spam or the giveaways’ legitimacy on our site.

5. Two heads are better than one (work with friends)

Other keen compers are a great resource of tips, links to competitions, and motivation.

Make friends with other compers or ask your friends to join in the fun with you. The more you surround yourself with like-minded people, the more you will hear about great opportunities (and the ones to avoid!).

There are loads of online comping communities, here are a few:

6. Think outside the online box

It’s so easy to find competitions online that many people don’t see what’s right under their nose in their local community. Explore your local shops, notice boards, and radio stations for giveaway opportunities that might not be promoted very well.

Radio shows always have competitions that are easy to enter. The good thing about them is that you find out straight away if you’ve won (some competitions take months to announce the winners).

Magazines and newspapers can be gold mines for competitions because they aren’t the first place people look. If you’re stealthy (or have a good memory), you can probably take a photo of the details and then look it up online if you don’t want to spend the money on the magazines.

Also, check the packaging on the things you buy. Many companies run lead generation competitions and promote them on their packaging (think chip packets, milk bottles, soda cans, chocolate bars, and ice cream rappers).

And don’t forget to keep an eye out everywhere you go for posters and advertisements promoting competitions.

7. Make sure you follow the rules

It sounds simple, but it’s easy to get carried away entering as many competitions as you can that you don’t check the rules. It doesn’t take long to read the rules to make sure you don’t disqualify yourself.

Remember, sometimes there are a lot of people entering the same competition as you. It becomes a major pain for the host to sort through thousands of entries and weed out those who simply didn’t bother to follow the rules, especially on social media, where it’s harder to track entrants.

Also, you might even get yourself in trouble if you use your social media profile to do something against the rules of that platform.

8. Take advantage of search engines

Google, YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter all make it easy to search for specific types of giveaways and competitions. If you’re looking for a particular prize, you can save yourself a lot of time by looking up something like “win a car” or “win a trip to Bali” (except no one’s going to Bali right now, but you get what I’m saying).

9. Think positive

Last but not least, think positive.

This might sound weird, but science is proving more and more that the way we think about things affects results. And it isn’t actually a new philosophy; Buddhists have been practicing positive thinking for centuries because of how it impacts what we manifest in our lives.

So, try to keep a positive mindset about the competitions and giveaways you’re entering. Remember, it’s not life and death, don’t let your desire to win take over simply having fun.
